Starbucks...Trimming the "Fat"

I am reminded of a story a client of mine once told me...

Originally from Michigan, he picked up and move to Seattle to attend college at The University of Washington in the 70's. His father was a successful professor and businessman and had made many wise stock investments - IBM, McDonalds, WalMart, etc...all did very well in the 80's. One day he called his father and... The Oprah Factor...

When Oprah endorses something, people take action...it is a well known fact that she has a great following, and has built a huge business around that network. But what makes Oprah so believable...especially when it comes to dieting?

She has publicly stated she is back on the Best Life Diet. I just saw Oprah being criticized on one of those entertainment shows - "Here... Read More

Maybe The Peanut Recall is a Blessing...?

Obviously I don't applaud anyone being sick, and certainly the deaths associated with the recall are nothing less than tragic...but from the sounds of it this recall may save Americans some otherwise "extra pounds." First of all, taking peanut products off the shelves won't hurt anyone's diet. Contrary to what many believe, peanuts are not a good source of... Read More

Coca Cola Under FDA Scrutiny.

Coca-Cola came out with a new product - Diet Coke Plus "With Vitamins & Minerals". The FDA is saying that Coke cannot make these claims. They say that Diet Coke doesn't have enough nutrients alone to claim "plus" and that it is inappropriate to add extra nutrients to snack foods and carbonated beverages. The FDA's requests for change have been... Read More

No More Reading Food Labels

Or at least, less reading if the new Smart Choices Program has anything to do with it. Did you hear about this new nutritional labeling program? After reviewing the details I (for the most part) like it. Dietitians of America have developed a big label that has a large green check mark, number of calories, and number of servings in the product. There are guidelines for... Read More

Is China Fatter Than The US?

I just read an article that stated China now has 1/3 of its population plagued by obesity. While it pales in comparison to the United States at 2/3...but remember, China has 1.3 Billion people compared to the states tiny 300 million. China has more obese people that the US has citizens!

Estimates say that China will reach the 2/3 obesity range in about 10 years at the... Read More

Big Applause for New York Governor

Did you see the proposed "fat tax" by the governor of New York? Put a 15% tax on non-diet sodas and other sugary drinks that contain less than 70% fruit juice. There is opposition to the tax as you can imagine...that it is unfair to single out sodas - but forget that...you have to start somewhere.

There was a lot of opposition to cigarette taxes, and there has... Read More

Snack Packs Help Shed Pounds.

You have most likely heard of the 100 Calorie Snack Packs. As a matter of fact, I have blogged about them before. I like them. Here is the way I look at it - you get your "sweets" fix, but only spend 100 calories...not bad. And of the snack packs, it really doesn't matter which one you choose - just pick the one that fills your need.

There was a recent study... Read More

Blog Series I - Why is America Getting Fatter? "Eat Fast, Get Fat!"

Bob and I are always trying to figure out why America is getting fatter and fatter. We have recently spoke of the "Holiday 10", which has mysteriously transformed over the years into the "Holiday 15". We know there are more processed foods, high fructose corn syrup has reared it's ugly head, and dairy has become a "health" food, but...

We are... Read More

You Don't Walk Fat Off Your Body!

I was reading a forum post on a popular health and fitness site and how people were claiming to walk "x" times per week and melt fat off their body. It is one thing for the non-fitness professional to make these claims, but there were posts from people claiming to be in the industry - and saying walking will melt fat off your body...

Not much fat.

Staying away from... Read More

Finally! A Ban on Fast Food Advertising...

...or maybe it is just talk about banning ads for fast food...but it is a start - it all starts somewhere! It is a fact that fast food has contributed to the obesity of America...how much? That is open for debate.

But The National Bureau of Economic Development has conducted research that claims the absence of fast food commercials would reduce childhood obesity by... Read More

The Triple Carmel, Extra Mocha Latte is Not The Problem

In our newsletter this week, we shared some information about the impact that Starbucks has on society. And I have blogged in the past about the cost of Starbucks, and the phenomenon that has been created by the coffee giant. Don't get me wrong, I go to Starbucks and I enjoy it.

I am 49 years old, and 9% body fat. I have worked hard to get my body where it is today. I... Read More

The Holiday Pounds Start With Halloween - Beware!

We all think of the "Holiday Season" beginning right after Thanksgiving and traditionally that is probably true...but when it comes to talking about the average 15 pounds people gain over the holidays - it starts this week with Halloween!

Think about it: your kids bring home dozens upon dozens of candy bars, sugar sticks, and taffy just waiting for consumption.... Read More
